Anniversary

Yesterday, by my best reckoning, is the 6th anniversary of the last time I took psychiatric "medications". If you've known me during this time, you've seen me blossom and seen how much I can do to help others, which was not possible under those horrible drugs. I also have damaged - but healing, despite my doctors' assertions - kidneys from that time. After nearly 40 years on doctor-administered drugs (which were so bad as to keep me from wanting to get involved in any other drugs), now I have been clean for six. What a world of difference this has made!

Checking out my-mfi

I'm here at the MindFreedom office with intern Anne Blumenthal and membership director Jeremy Bensman, who launched this my-mfi web site.

We're very much looking for everyone's input about the way to move my-mfi to the next level. This can be a safe, interactive place for people who want to really change the mental health system, to network together for better alternatives in the mental health system.

Let us know your input!

More About Tasers

If you are looking to hear more about the use of tasers in Maine then Google "taser maine" or "taser emmc". The first use of a taser in Maine I hear is coming out of Bangor at Eastern Maine Medical Center where the hospital has purchased a taser to be locked at the hospital and used by Bangor Police only in extreme situations. I hear from my research though that a tasers has been used so far to date about a dozen times. See for yourself.

MFI Maine Against Forced Outpatient Committment

For several years John M. Nutting a Democratic senator from Androscoggin, Maine has been trying to put forth a legislative bill stiffening laws allowing "forced outpatient committment". We continue the fight and will not stand down. Simply put forced outpatient committment will not work. Forcing anyone to do anything against their will simply will not work. There are better ways of getting people to seek treatment. Peers in Maine are working together to help improve lives. Senator Nutting was charged with gathering together CSX to talk and discuss ways to get people to seek treatment.

Let's Hear Your ECT Stories

MindFreedom International has campaigned for the right of Ray Sandford to say "no" to his ongoing, outpatient forced electroshock. Today the Ray Campaign has finally achieved victory: No More Forced Electroshock for Ray, Ever! Many people do not understand the long term affects ECT may have on an individual. MindFreedom Maine is preparing a campaign against the use of any ECT. We want to hear your stories. Please let us know your experiences.

EMMC Emergency Department Makes Me Sick

Submitted by Wesley P. Mallett on October 24, 2009. I make this argument shortly after a military sound cannon, rubber bullets, and tear gas were unleashed on peaceful student protesters in the United States. Bangor Police Department has been given a taser by EMMC for emergency room use. I do not believe tasers belong in hospitals. EMMC (Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, Maine) emergency room service is very poor. EMMC is not equipped to handle mental patients. Police Departments are poorly trained in psychology, passive restraint, and mental crisis management.

MindFreedom Maine Against The Use Of Tasers In Hospitals

A call to all consumers/survivors/ex-patients went out this week to meet in Bangor, Maine on November 9, 2009 at 11am to demonstrate against the use of tasers in the Emergency Department of Eastern Maine Medical Center. The article located at: http://www.emsresponder.com/web/online/ED-News/Maine-Hospital-to-Purchase-Taser/24$10047 explains that the hospital plans to purchase tasers for use by the Bangor Police Department as a means to quiet patients in crisis.
